The following is based on my own opinion and no warranty is expressed or implied.
There is very little information available at the moment regarding the newly released GARMAP software.
GARMAP provides nation wide South African Street Level Data for Garmin map enabled units.
The GARMAP product includes a copy of the standard MapSource engine from Garmin.
Effectively, this tool allows you to manage waypoints, tracks and routes,
besides transferring maps to and from the Garmin unit.
From my own usage to date, I am very impressed with the level of data and accuracy of the product.
There are one or two minor errors in areas where roads have changed within the past few months
but other than that, my experience of it in the Cape Town area has left me and a couple of users impressed.
The biggest issue with the map data is the memory capacity of your Garmin unit
which is why I have put together the following table.
I have found that units like the 1.4 MB Garmin III+ are going to battle with this product due to insufficient memory.
It is still possible to use these units connected to a laptop to enjoy all the map sections simultaneously.
The GARMAP product installs as a number of smaller map area sub-sections or
segments. The following table illustrates the map segments and memory they
require.
I've compiled a few groups below to illustrate what a typical user would
require.
A list of all the segments and their sizes are included at the end of this
table.
