We now have decent map information for South Africa

GARMIN	GARMIN has released the following map products for South Africa
	GARMAP - this requires 51MB of memory for a full installation. Most towns and cities in South Africa are detailed to street level. The map is broken down into many smaller areas of about 200 KB allowing GPS units with limited memory to store only what is required.This software does not provide auto-routing.
	City Select SA - this requires 6.84 MB with auto routing turned off and 11.7 MB for a full installation with auto routing. Major cities are included (currently with the exception of Port Elizabeth).The map is broken down into a few segments, some are large - 3.5 MB.    This software provides auto routing for units that support the facility. (Translation = The unit will plot a route for you, following roads, with detailed instructions when to turn left or right - an exceptionally useful feature)   You can see exactly what City Select SA provides by viewing the product online

	A marine Points of Interest (POI) CD is due out soon

Third Party Map Software	These links do change from time to time as the owners modify their sites so you may need to resort to a search engine to find these products.
	OZIEXPLORER  A super management tool for waypoints and routes. Scan your own maps in or find them for sale on the web
	FUGAWI  Similar to Ozi-Explorer
	MAPMASTER EAZI (discontinued) Basically a digital copy of the local Map Studio paper map books. Excellent software with the ability to search for street names. You need to download patches from their web site to enable GPS communication.    A number of my customers and I had great use out of this product. We all found that in most cases the map accuracy when coupled to a GPS was out by about a 100 metres or so - but it still got you around quite nicely.   Disadvantage - you could not download any of these maps to the GPS. This meant you either used the product coupled to a GPS and a notebook in your car, or you found your destination on the map and sent a waypoint to the GPS.   Apparently the product has been discontinued, but their closing comment is that another product is on the way.
